Each year, ITI conducts training programs for members of the Sheet Metal Workers International Association (SMART) who want to become HVAC service technicians.
Note: Each class will be limited to 12 participants per class and is one week long.
Members who attended the HVAC Basic Service Technician Training (Intense Class) are eligible for this class. Exceptions may be possible with extensive review with Business Manager, JATC Coordinator, Contractor, and Participant

This course is open to SMART members currently working for an HVAC service contractor who wants to expand their HVAC service department and needs additional service technicians. All participants are required to complete and sign a Scholarship Loan Agreement (SLA).

This comprehensive class is designed for the beginning service technician. This concentrated training program consists of 130 hours of intense classroom and hands-on training within a 14-day schedule.

The Benchmark Draft course is designed to prepare a student for taking the ITI’s Detailing Certification test. The Detailing Certification exam has four parts: a general knowledge test, an AutoCAD test, a Benchmark Project Management test, and a Benchmark Draft test. This comprehensive course covers all aspects necessary to become a competent detailer, including the use of Benchmark’s Training Software’s Drafting and Project Management portions. The course covers project setup, standard setups, part libraries, part placement, tracking correspondences - such as RFI’s and submittals - as well as many other aspects in the drafting software.
The Benchmark Detailing Certification test is given on the last day of this class, allowing students who pass the exam the opportunity to become an ITI Certified Detailer. Upon successful completion of the Certification test, the student will be allowed to download the Benchmark software and also be licensed to activate the appropriate portion(s) of the software. The Benchmark Estimation course is designed to prepare a student for taking the ITI’s Estimation Certification test. In this course the Student will learn how to use the ITI’s Benchmark software to create estimation standards that his/her company uses, how to create new projects, how to create new drawings for pickoff and creating estimation templates. They will also learn how to create an estimate using pickoff and adding items to the estimate.
The Benchmark Estimation Certification test is given during this class, allowing students who pass the exam the opportunity to become an ITI Certified Estimator. Upon successful completion of the Certification test, the student will be allowed to download the Benchmark software and also be licensed to activate the appropriate portion(s) of the software. The Benchmark Fabrication course is designed to prepare a student for taking the ITI’s Fabrication Certification test. In this course the Student will learn how to use the ITI’s Benchmark software to set up his/her companies plasma table, manage how patterns are nested on to sheet sizes, manage and print labels for fabrication, process downloads from the detailer and update batch status in the BIM model.
The Benchmark Fabrication Certification test is given during this class, allowing students who pass the exam the opportunity to become an ITI Certified Fabricator. Upon successful completion of the Certification test, the student will be allowed to download the Benchmark software and also be licensed to activate the appropriate portion(s) of the software. The Benchmark Field Installation course is designed to prepare a student for taking the ITI’s Field Installation Certification test. In this course the student will learn how to monitor field crew productivity, order materials, and track the installation of ductwork, fittings and equipment.
The Benchmark Field Installation Certification test is given during this class, allowing students who pass the exam the opportunity to become an ITI Certified Field Installer. Upon successful completion of the Certification test, the student will be allowed to download the Benchmark software and also be licensed to activate the appropriate portion(s) of the software. Becoming an AWS Certified Welding Inspector readies the unionized workforce to fulfill the current and future industry welding market needs. The skills and knowledge of CWI's assure weld integrity throughout the industry. Sheet Metal CWI's are now helping contractors read specifications and drawings as well as assisting in evaluating projects to determine pertinent codes.
Attendance Eligibility
Any member in good standing with the SMART is eligible to obtain the CWI certification. Participants should have the aptitude to understand codes, engineering procedures, and inspection techniques. Being a welder is not mandatory for becoming a CWI.
How the Program Operates
The subject and type of test questions for the AWS CWI examination are the main focus of this program. Three to four hours of studying nightly, beyond the classroom training is needed to successfully pass the examination. You must submit a completed ITI and AWS application to ITI's main office. The AWS application must have a form of payment made out to AWS for the exam. Once you have submitted the ITI application and AWS application to the ITI main office, a letter will be mailed to you about six weeks prior to the exam date. This letter, along with study material, will explain our web site testing procedures.
All students will work in the AWS D1.1 (latest edition) Structural Welding Code. Each applicant will receive the latest edition of the code book to use and take back to their JATC. Students will also work in the Part B Examination Book of the Specification Booklet.
You will receive this book from AWS along with your acceptance letter.
Be sure to bring this book to class. There will be hands-on training with inspector tools, and porosity and tensile exercises.

This course is open to SMART members who are currently working for an HVAC service contractor who wants to expand the HVAC service department and needs additional service technicians. All participants are required to complete and sign a Scholarship Loan Agreement (SLA).
The ITI is offering a 40 hour Energy Audit Technician course at five chosen JATC training center locations (Cleveland, St. Louis, Detroit, Albuquerque, and Southern California) which will be open for enrollment for members in good standing.
These courses are being held as part of an ARRA grant awarded to the ITI through the Department of Labor. The course will cover Energy Utilization Indexing (EUI) of a property along with Total HVAC Systems energy auditing of a commercial building. An exam at the conclusion of the course will be given as a step towards attaining an Energy Audit Technician certification through the ICB. This course is meant to prepare individuals for training to become an energy audit technician through an energy audit contractors program.
This course provides an overview of installing, inspecting, and maintaining the various types of dampers in HVAC systems in both new and existing buildings. The purpose of this course is to help you prepare to pass the Fire Life Safety Level 1

Fitting Input Tool (FIT) online software is one of the latest tools developed by the ITI. This online training course is available through the ITI Learning Portal. As a certified FIT user, you will increase your speed and efficiency because FIT:
Unionized sheet metal workers in good standing can sign up and complete the online course for free. Upon successful completion of the certification exam, you will be allowed to download the fitting input portion of the Benchmark BIM Training Software to activate the fitting input program. FIT is also available online. FIT can be accessed on all major web browsers supporting HTML5 (Chrome, Firefox, Explorer, Opera, Safari) and mobile devices with an Internet connection (Android phones/tablets and Apple iPhone/iPad).

This course is open to SMART members currently working for an HVAC service contractor who wants to expand their HVAC service department and needs additional service technicians, or a contractor who wants to start an HVAC service department. All participants are required to complete and sign a Scholarship Loan Agreement (SLA).
All participants must be approved by the Local JATC Coordinator.
The ITI is offering Phenolic Board Fabrication and Installation Courses at five chosen JATC training center locations (Cleveland, St. Louis, Detroit, Albuquerque, and Southern California) which will be open for enrollment for members in good standing. These courses are being held as part of an ARRA grant awarded to the ITI through the Department of Labor. This course will teach students how to fabricate and install ductwork using phenolic board, an emerging material for fabricating ductwork. The course will also cover how to use a KD3z CNC machine to cut out specific patterns used in this work. At the end of the course, the student will have the opportunity to become a certified fabricator and installer with this product.
Phenolic board is considered to be better for the environment than traditional sheet metal ductwork. Using phenolic board means a CFC free, low carbon emission production and fabrication process which gives the best protection of the environment for ductwork installation. Phenolic board can create very high IAQ benefits to your customer with its highest rated R-values, low air leakage characteristics, and its smooth aluminum interior which provides excellent airflow.

This intensive five-day, 40-hour course is designed for motivated sheet metal workers who want to create their own service department, vie for promotion to service manager, or start their own service business. It covers everything from hiring skilled personnel and dealing with vendors, to day-to-day duties and advertising/marketing. This course balances a presentation of career development opportunities while providing a realistic perspective essential to success.
This course, provided solely online, teaches the knowledge and skills necessary to successfully supervise a project in the construction industry. You will learn the importance of communication skills, proper planning, how to maximize productivity and profit on a job site, and strategies for dealing with unforeseen problems. The Test Supervisor training course prepares the Test Supervisor (AWS QC-1 current Certified Welding Inspector) to give a welder certification test within the scope of the ITI Quality Assurance Manual. It trains the Test Facility Representative (a JATC person who can make legally binding commitments and statements on behalf of the facility) to work in accordance with the ITI QA Manual.
Upon completion, the Test Supervisor and/or Facility Representative will become part of the ITI quality welding program. This will prepare them for an AWS/ITI Accredited Test Facility Accreditation. A JATC or facility can become nationally accredited by submitting an application to ITI, and by meeting all the requirements under the ITI Quality Assurance program and the AWS QC-4 standard. These standards assure that the JATC has met the basic requirements for equipment and its calibration, procedures and trained personnel. The requirements assure quality control of welder testing for the Sheet Metal Workers International Association.

After completion of this course you will be able to go back to the JATC and prepare the JATC for AWS/ITI Accreditation or become part of an ATF that is already established.
Note: All applicants will receive 40 PDHs toward their CWI 9-year renewal.
The ITI will be instructing a 120 hour TAB course in four chosen JATC training center locations (Cleveland, St. Louis, Detroit, and Southern California) which will be open for enrollment to members in good standing. These courses are being held as part of an ARRA grant awarded to the ITI through the Department of Labor. The course will include comprehensive training on the theory of heat transfer, psychometrics, related math formulas, proper procedural usage of instruments, report development, and hands-on industry standard testing, adjusting, and balancing procedures as performed by a certified TAB technician. Participants will be provided an opportunity to take the TAB technician written certification exam. If successful in passing, participants will be scheduled and tested in the hands-on performance portion to complete the certified testing process, providing an opportunity for the member to exit the course as a certified TAB technician.
The program will run for a full three week period with classes being held from Monday through Saturday each week from 7:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. (Times may vary).

The Welding Supervisor Training Course is designed for any member who is a Certified Welding Inspector (CWI) under AWS QC-1 Program and has completed the Test Supervisor Training Course. Representatives from ITI will instruct the 40-hour training course.

Providing a properly trained workforce is a key objective of the ITI. Technician Classes are offered for all JATC Instructors and SMART Members.
