The ITI offers multiple certifications within its BIM program. The Detailing Certification is a comprehensive test that measures an individual’s ability to “detail” or “draft” a project in today’s high tech construction industry. This certification was designed to give an owner confidence that the certified individual is highly skilled and qualified in the field of Detailing. The certification uses Benchmark BIM Training Software as part of the test but will benefit detailers running any third party software.
The test consists of four parts: a written portion, an AutoCAD portion (which includes a field measuring section), a Benchmark Project Management portion, and a Benchmark Draft portion. Upon successful completion of the certification test, the student will be allowed to download the ITI’s Benchmark Training Software and be licensed to activate its Drafting portion. The certification test may be taken at any of the ITI’s BIM Academies or at a JATC that is an ITI Accredited BIM Facility.

The Estimation portion measures an individual’s ability to use the Estimation component of the ITI’s Benchmark Training Software to create estimations standards used by his/her company, create new projects and create new drawings for pickoff. The individual will also learn how to create an estimate from using the pickoff, and adding items and how to create estimation templates for reuse. Upon successful completion of the certification test, the student will be allowed to download the ITI’s Benchmark Training Software and license to activate the software's Estimation portion. The certification test may be taken at any of the ITI’s BIM Academies or at a JATC that is an ITI Accredited BIM Facility. The Fabrication Certification measures an individual’s ability to use the Fabrication component of ITI’s Benchmark Training Software to set up fabrication settings, create patterns, nest fittings, generate machine code, generate part labels and sheet reports, and set up machine configurations, as well as other components contained in the software.
This is a comprehension test that covers multiple aspects of the software’s fabrication component. Upon successful completion of the certification test, the student will be allowed to download the ITI’s Benchmark Training Software and license to activate the software's Fabrication portion. The Fitting Input Certification measures an individual’s ability to use the fitting input part of Benchmark to input fittings into batches, create electronic batch files from the data, and create shop tickets from the data, as well as other components of the software. This certification is given along with the Fabrication Certification but may be taken on its own if desired. Upon successful completion of the certification test, the student will be allowed to download the fitting input portion of the Benchmark and will be licensed to activate the fitting input portion of the software. The certification test may be taken at any of ITI’s BIM Academies or at a JATC that is an ITI Accredited BIM Facility. The purpose of this course is to provide the foundation for installing, inspecting, and maintaining fire dampers, smoke dampers, combination fire/smoke dampers, and ceiling dampers in HVAC in new and existing buildings.
In addition, the course covers relevant building code requirements in the context of effective operation for property protection, life safety requirements, building design and performance, and the applicable standards for product testing and performance under fire conditions.
The purpose of this course is to provide education on inspection, testing, and maintenance of mechanical smoke control systems. There are two main categories of mechanical smoke management systems used in buildings: pressurization systems and exhaust systems. This course focuses on the features and component of the first category, pressurization systems. Pressurization systems inhibit or control smoke during a fire event by utilizing mechanical fans to produce pressure differentials across smoke barriers. The last unit of this course covers exhaust systems for atria and other large volume spaces.
The ITI offers the Train-the-Trainer course, "Lay Responder First Aid and CPR/AED Instructor.” The purpose of this class is to train instructor candidates to teach basic level American Red Cross First Aid, CPR, and AED courses to lay responders.

The purpose of this course is to provide the background knowledge essential to understanding the effective operation of laboratory fume hoods and the means for measuring their performance according to ANSI/ASHRAE standard 110-1995 Method of Testing Performance of Laboratory Fume Hoods. Upon completion of this course members can take an ICB (International Certification Board) approved exam which is administered through NEMI/TABB.
The ITI actively encourages the certification of members who work in the HVAC industry by offering several levels of HVAC certification. ITI certification of a HVAC Mechanic, Technician, or Master Mechanic is a statement that the individual is a competent, reliable, and qualified craftsperson who is able to perform HVAC Installation and Service, and to ensure that HVAC systems are installed and operating at established requirements.
The ITI actively encourages the certification of members who work in the HVAC industry by offering several levels of HVAC certification. They are progressive in nature and include industry-recognized certifications as a prerequisite to ITI certification. At the highest level of ITI certification, a member would hold certifications from the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), the Air Conditioning, Heating and Refrigeration Institute (AHRI), and North American Technical Expertise (NATE). Additionally, the ITI encourages training coordinators to have their facilities prepared to offer the prerequisite tests on a regular basis to members, as well as have proctors available to administer the tests. Direct support for these efforts is available through your ITI representative.
Through SMOHIT, ITI offers three courses for OSHA trainers: OSHA 500, OSHA 502 and OSHA 510. These courses will allow individuals from your local area to become qualified as an OSHA Authorized Construction Outreach Program Trainer. These trainers are authorized to conduct 10-hour and/or 30-hour Construction Outreach Health & Safety courses and issue OSHA completion cards to their students. Individuals who successfully complete either OSHA 500 or OSHA 502 will also receive a Disaster Site Worker Outreach Trainer Credential.
The ITI offers TAB certification exams to its signatory members. This certification exam, in association with the SMART affiliated Testing, Adjusting, and Balancing Bureau (TABB), has achieved the distinguished ANSI accreditation for personnel certification. Members who receive JATC training in TAB will be encouraged to continue on with formal training and education in TAB, and to achieve certification.
Individuals attaining certification make a statement to the industry that certified TAB technicians are competent, reliable, and qualified professionals able to perform without on-the-job supervision, and are adept at the testing, adjusting, and balancing of air and hydronic building environmental and industrial systems to meet design objectives.
The ITI currently oversees 90 AWS Accredited Testing Facilities that can assist you with all procedure and welder qualification testing needs. These facilities can perform testing to any welding code. Some of the more common codes in our industry include AWS D1.1, AWS D9.1, AWS D1.3, ASME, AWS D1.2, and AWS D1.6.

Certification credentials maintain the sheet metal industry‘s high standards of practices, and can also open up additional job opportunities for qualified members.
